Almost everything that goes wrong with an online order is discoverable on day one.

The trouble is that most people don't look. A parcel arrives, gets opened, the contents get put somewhere, and the problem surfaces three weeks later — by which time the return window has closed and what was a swap has become something you live with.

The checks below take about fifteen minutes in total. They're organised by what you ordered, and the last one applies to everything.

Before you open anything: write down the date

Find the return window and note the last day on a calendar.

It's usually 14 or 30 days from delivery, not from order, and it's almost never the thing you remember correctly. Three weeks later you'll be guessing — and guessing wrong in the direction that costs you.

Also keep the packaging until you're sure. Many returns need the original box, and flattening it on day one is a decision you can't reverse.

Clothing and footwear — try it on today, with tags attached

Not tomorrow. Today, before anything gets worn, washed or hung up.

Keep the tags on. A removed tag ends most return rights, and it comes off almost automatically when you're pleased with something. Try everything on before a single tag is cut.

Check against measurements, not the size letter. Chest, length, sleeve, waist in centimetres — compared with a garment you already own and like, laid flat and measured. Sizing varies by nearly a full size between brands, so S or M on its own tells you very little.

For shoes, check the insole length rather than the size number, and try them on at the end of the day when feet are at their largest. A shoe that fits in the morning and not at 6pm is a shoe that doesn't fit.

Indoors, on carpet. Soles mark instantly on pavement, and a marked sole is usually not returnable.

Electronics — charge it fully and use every function

The first charge cycle and the first full use tell you most of what you need to know.

Charge to 100% and note how long it took. A battery that charges unusually fast often isn't the capacity claimed. A battery that won't reach full is a fault, and it's a fault worth finding now.

Test every port, button and mode. The one you won't use for a month is the one that will turn out not to work.

Check what arrived against what was listed. Cables, adapters, manuals, spare tips. Missing accessories are easy to resolve on day one and awkward later.

For audio, listen at low volume in a quiet room. Driver faults and channel imbalance disappear under loud music and are obvious when it's quiet. Play something in mono to check both sides are level.

Pair it with the devices you actually own, not just the nearest one. Compatibility problems are specific.

Beauty and personal care — check the seal, the batch and a small patch

Check the seal is intact and the packaging is undamaged. An unsealed product is one to return rather than investigate.

Find the batch code and the period-after-opening symbol — the small open-jar icon with a number and the letter M, meaning how many months the product stays good once opened. Note the date you opened it somewhere, because you won't remember in eight months.

Try a small amount on a small area first, and leave it a day before using it properly. This is ordinary practice with anything new on skin, and it's much easier to do on day one than after you've used half the bottle.

For devices — trimmers, dryers, styling tools — run them for a minute and listen. Rattles and burning smells on first use don't improve.

Car accessories — test the fit before anything becomes permanent

This is the category where the first hour genuinely matters, because several of these products can't be un-installed.

Dry-fit everything before removing an adhesive backing. Hold the mount where it will go, with your phone in it, and check it doesn't block a vent you need, a control, or your view. Once the backing is off, the decision is made.

Then clean the surface properly and wait. Isopropyl alcohol, not a wet wipe. Press for the full time the instructions state, and leave it 24 hours before hanging any weight on it. Adhesive needs that time to reach full strength, and skipping it is the single most common reason mounts fail weeks later.

Check vent clips grip the blade rather than resting on it, and that the vent still turns.

For anything that plugs into the car, test it with the engine running and the engine off. Some sockets are only live with ignition on, and that changes how you'd use the product.

Home and kitchen — measure the space before you unwrap

Measure where it's going first. Depth as well as width, and the gap it has to pass through to get there. A piece that doesn't fit is far easier to return in its packaging than after it's been wrestled into a room.

Check for transit damage before assembly. Corners, glass, and anything that was packed flat. Assembling a damaged item converts a return into a repair request.

Run cookware and containers through the dishwasher once if you intend to use it that way, and see what happens. Coatings and printed markings that won't survive it tend to show on the first cycle.

For small appliances, run them empty first where the instructions allow — kettles, blenders, air fryers. Any burning smell from manufacturing residue happens on the first run, and you want that happening with nothing in it.

Check the cable reaches from where the appliance sits to the nearest socket. It's a dull thing to discover afterwards.

Everything: photograph the receipt and file the warranty

Five minutes that pays for itself the first time something fails.

Photograph the receipt or invoice and the serial number on the product. File it somewhere by the year you bought it — a folder, a notes app, anywhere you'll look.

Note the warranty length and work out the expiry date. A warranty you've forgotten you have is a warranty you don't have, and that's the normal way they go unused.

Register the product with the manufacturer where it's offered. It usually takes two minutes and occasionally extends the cover.

The short version

Day one: note the return deadline. Try on clothing with tags attached. Charge electronics fully and test every function. Dry-fit car accessories before removing any adhesive. Measure before unwrapping furniture or appliances.

Day two: use the things you're unsure about properly, while you still have a decision to make.

Either day: photograph the receipt and note the warranty expiry.

Everything we sell lists the measurements, specifications and limits that these checks are against — garment measurements in centimetres, full electronics specs, real dimensions. If something isn't clear on a page, ask us before you order rather than after it arrives.
